2003 Design Award Winners Architects and friends of the profession gathered at The American Institute of Architects Northeast Illinois 2003 Honor Awards event where eight projects received recognition. Four awards for excellence in design and four awards for merit in architecture were presented at the association’s biennial “Celebration of Architecture” event held at McDonald’s Lodge in Oak Brook. Most of the winning projects were facilities intended for use by large groups of people and included two schools, two churches, an office interior, a company headquarters, a church renovation, and an electrical substation. Fifty-two entries were submitted by architects in suburban Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. The entries were submitted in the following categories: Distinguished Building, Preservation/Adaptive Reuse, Residential, Interiors, and Divine Details/Architectural Ideas. The 2003 jury was composed of Bernard J. Cywinski, FAIA; Lynn Taylor, AIA; and Rachel Simmons Schade, AIA, all of Philadelphia. Mr. Cywinski, jury chair, is principle of the firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson which has offices in Pennsylvania, Seattle, and Berkeley, CA. His work has appeared in many distinguished journals and other publications including Architecture, Architectural Record, Architecture and Urbanism, Places, The Washington Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer.
