Adams Central Elementary School, Monroe, Indiana

This rural northeast Indiana school needed to expand but tight budgeting restricted the project to $90 per square foot.  In order to meet the budget and create a strong identity for the elementary school the design solution creates two pavilions projecting from the classroom wing to form the entrance and the library.  The entry pavilion houses public functions including administrative offices and a waiting area.  Red brick is used as an accent, referencing the school colors.  It also contrasts with the buff brick used to match existing construction in the rest of the school campus.  Indirect lighting reflects off the ceilings of both pavilions during evening hours when the school is used for community events.  The L-shape of the new wing creates a protected outdoor playground.  The building has been enthusiastically received by both students and parents.

Jury Comment:

  • Great sense of light and lightness
  • Nicely detailed
  • Excellent job of joining the existing building with the new additions
  • Addition is a graceful extension of the existing details and massing yet also has its own voice
