“MATCHING  A  CHURCH  ADDITION  TO  THE  BUILDING,  CHARACTER  AND  HISTORY  OF  A  CONGREGATION”

“Contemporary”, “Historic” and “Inviting” describe the character of this congregation.  The charge of the congregation to the architect (the challenges) was to:

1) remain on the existing, yet very limited site,
2) integrate a new addition with the detailing of the existing historic building,
3) provide for all of the space needs of a contemporary church, and
4) make their historic, yet imposing building, both open and inviting.

Of near equal challenge was constructing the building on a very limited and sloped site, situated on the corner of two major vehicular arteries.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS / SOLUTIONS:
The building addition, was built tight to the set-backs, was carefully detailed to be both contemporary and inviting while at the same time remaining in keeping with the historic detailing of the existing building.

The sense of history was not merely maintained with the addition, it was enhanced.  The parking is located at the rear of the building.  To make the 360 degree walk into the Sanctuary,  as one enters the building, one is drawn to the wide gallery/corridor one side of which is the existing outside wall of the church (which was left  exposed).  One cannot walk this entry sequence corridor without recognizing a rich history in this church and congregation.  All of the space program requirements were successfully realized by the architect in this multi-level addition.
