This month’s meeting will be a presentation and discussion on “Legal Challenges for Small Firms.” The presenter will be Mr. Eric Singer, a partner with the law firm Taft, Stettinius & Hollister.  Eric is a construction lawyer, counselor, litigator and mediator concentrating on construction law, mechanics liens, litigation and dispute resolution. Eric has also been a long-time contributor to the AIA NEI Chapter. Attendees should come prepared with their questions during the open discussion portion of the meeting as Eric will answer as many as possible. 1. Compare different practice structures (sole proprietorship, LLC, LLP, Corporation) and their impact on personal liability, taxation, and business growth.
2. Learn about recent Illinois law changes that will affect your architectural practice.
3. Understand your legal obligations when working for a contractor under a Design-Build contract.
4. Formulate a plan for managing risk in specific scenarios: pro-bono work, sketch documents, and checking third-party contractor licenses.
